When you hear the word "summer", what is the first thing that comes to your mind? For me, it's long summer nights, salty hair, suntanned skin, cookouts filled with delicious food. In my opinion, there’s no better season.
It’s the time of year that always seems to bring out the best in people. After a long, brutally cold winter, everyone is eager to spend their free time doing any and everything outdoors. It’s also the season where many farmers are working from sun up to sun down growing and harvesting their best produce.
When I was a child, I spent many a summer at my grandparents' house. We would sit in the shade of the back porch and we would always be working on some sort of fruit or vegetable. Some days, we would spend our days shucking corn. Other days, we would shell peas and break beans for hours on end.
It never ceased to amaze me at just how much produce was grown. Each year, there seemed to be more than the last! At a young age, I grew to appreciate the true work that goes into growing your own food.
Something on my “to do” list for the summer is to visit a farm where you can select your own produce. It’s the perfect way to relive some of my most cherished childhood memories of days spent at my grandparents’ garden. One of the main stops I’ll be making is to a fruit farm. On this farm, they have blueberries, strawberries, and my favorite fruit ever - raspberries! I am intending on stocking up on that fruit in particular.
When you have a great deal of fruit, such as I will have of raspberries, it’s impossible to consume them all before they spoil. You have to plan ahead for the various uses. I will freeze a portion, snack on a portion, and make jams with the remaining. Before I do anything, though, I’m making my all-time favorite raspberry cream pie. It’s the staple of my summer BBQs!
It’s one of those types of desserts that you won’t be able to stop eating after just one piece. It’s the perfect dessert for any occasion or even for no occasion at all. Check out the following page to read just how to make this delicious, creamy, summertime treat!
