Fiona is a Nile Hippopotamus who stole the hearts of everyone when she was born six weeks prematurely in January 2016. The little Hippo was the first Nile Hippo born at the Cincinnati Zoo in 75 years, and weighed only 29 pounds, a full 25 pounds less than the previous record for her species. Unfortunately, because of how early she was born the zoo required the help of the Cincinnati’s Children Hospital to make sure she survived.
Fiona won over hearts with her persistence and sweet mannerisms. When her father passed away in October from an infection he’d been battling since he arrived at the zoo from the last facility he lived at, Fiona missed her father greatly. She’d often spent her days lounging around with her parents. It made it even more spectacular that Fiona celebrated her first birthday this year!
Fiona has come a long way since her birth, and has gained plenty of weight! By the time she was almost two months old, she weighed in at 275 pounds! In less than a month, she weighed 317 pounds! In late August, when she was seven months old, she weighed 451 pounds.
Fiona spent her birthday with her mother, and was rewarded with a delicious cake made just for Hippos! The cake featured watermelon and pineapples and all sorts of other delicious bites! Luckily, at the rate she’s growing we’re sure to have years to come with this adorable little Hippo and we can’t wait to see how she progresses over the next year!
