When most people think of going to a cafe, they think of going somewhere casual to eat and maybe have coffee or tea. Did you know that there are other types of cafes, though? In Brooklyn, NY, there is a cafe that has a dual purpose, neither of which is to feed people.
The Brooklyn Cat Cafe opened in 2016, and is the first of its kind in Brooklyn. The cafe has a dual purpose: 1. to provide a place where people of the community can spend time with adoptable and completely adorable cats. 2. to give the community the tools needed to help animals in need.
Unfortunately, not all kittens are able to be adopted. One such kitten, a sweet little girl named Ebony, tested positive for FIV , Feline Leukemia. FIV is extremely contagious and cats that have it do not have long lifespans. Due to this, Ebony was unable to be near the other cats for risk of exposure. Cats are not meant to be alone, though, and the poor thing was extremely lonely and desperate for a friend.
While looking for a small animal to be the young kitten's friend, they found a rat that was needing to be rescued. Unsure what the two would make of one another, they went ahead and put the rat in with the kitten. To everyone's surprise, they warmed right up to each other. They named the white rat Ivory. Ivory and Ebony were faithful friends until Ebony passed away at five months old.
Needing a new companion for Ivory, they placed him in with the young kittens to keep them company, but, unfortunately, he passed away soon after. The kittens loved their rat companion so much that the Cafe reached out to another rescue organization and were able to secure two new rats.
Emile and Remy are two rats that have been raised around cats and were the perfect rats for the job! They have been terrific nannies for the young felines. Emile, in particular, has become quite maternal with his playmates and likes to groom them and give them comfort. Remy, on the other hand, is the more playful of the two caregivers. Even though cats and rats are thought of as mortal enemies, these friends are proof that this is not always the case!
Everyone who visits the Brooklyn Cat Cafe falls in love with not only the cafe cats, but also the resident cafe rats! To see more of this story and watch the rats in action check out the video, below.
