Although the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, don’t “officially” begin until Friday when the elaborate Opening Ceremonies are set to be held, some competitions have already happened.

On Thursday, matches were held in the new Olympic event, Mixed Doubles Curling. In their first day of the tournament, American brother/sister team of Matt and Becca Hamilton came away victorious against the Russian husband/wife team of Alexander Krushelnitskiy and Anastasia Bryzgalova.

Interesting tidbit: Russians were dressed in simple black and white jerseys, not their usual ornate uniforms from previous years. This is part of the sanctions imposed upon the Russian Olympic team due to the doping scandal that caused 28 athletes to be disqualified from competing this year.

Many of those sanctions were lifted on appeal, but 11 Russian athletes remain ineligible to compete. In addition, there are certain penalties that were imposed upon the Russians, including the restriction on their uniforms. Accordingly, Russian uniforms may include only the athletes’ last names and the single tag, “Olympic Athlete From Russia.”

What a great first day for these U.S. athletes! Now, on to the next 17 glorious days and all the pageantry and excitement that accompanies a worldwide competition of this magnitude.
