We're all aware of how much nurturing a brand new baby requires during the crucial beginning stages of life. They're completely dependant on us to provide love and care that will help them thrive and grow into healthy, happy little human beings. Sometimes there are complications when a baby is born, perhaps a premature birth or other unforeseen events, prolonging the newborn's hospital stay.
In times like these, a mother and child need ongoing assistance if they are to flourish and get well. Only then, can they and make that long-awaited trip to home-sweet-home. During these longer stays, doctors and nurses can do only so much. Due to limited resources, the care they can provide is usually geared toward meeting only their medical needs.
That’s where volunteers like David Deutchman can step in to fill this gap in care. This thoughtful gentleman donates his time, several times a week, to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's NICU and PICU units. There, he fills a vital purpose; he holds, sings, and snuggles beautiful newborn babies, giving them the human touch that they so desperately crave.
Having been a volunteer for 12 years, he's known as 'ICU Grandpa.' The staff and nurses love David and have only the nicest things to say about him. The impact that he has on all these babies’ lives is incredible. The warmth and care that he shows these infants helps them to grow, put on weight, and transform into healthy children.
It's a sweet story of a man with a great servant’s heart who has found an incredible purpose in the later years of his life. He is dedicated to helping those who are weak, voiceless, and in need of some tender loving care during a crucial time in their lives.
David says, "It's been wonderful because it gives me something to do that has meaning to it." His beautiful acts of kindness help give newborns a fighting chance at life, and his great story is one that you'll want to see for yourself!
