Ospreys are unique among North American raptors for their ability to dive into the water from high altitudes and catch fish. This amazing ability means that their diet is almost completely reliant on fish, so they nest and raise their chicks near water.

Ospreys will build their nests near salt marshes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs, and estuaries ensuring their ability to feed their young. While they are quite large, they have slim bodies that enable them to crash into the water and catch the fish they so heavily rely upon.
