When it comes to a pregnancy test, it has one use: to determine if a woman is with child or not. The last thing you would think of hearing about is a man taking a pregnancy test. Believe it or not, it happened and because it did, a man dodged a major health scare and his life was spared.
19-year-old Byron Geldard had spent some time on vacation with his family. When he arrived back home, he felt a great deal of discomfort in his lower abdomen. He tried to go on about life and ignore it but it persisted to the point that he knew something was wrong.
His doctor first thought that it was just muscle pain from a rigorous workout but proceeded with testing just to be sure. Unfortunately, it was much more serious than post-workout pain. His doctor performed an ultrasound and found a tumor in his body that was quickly spreading to his lungs.
At this point, they were unsure of the type of cancer. They asked him to provide a urine sample to run a pregnancy test to help narrow down the types. Believe it or not, one of the hormones that are released during pregnancy is the same as what is present in a male who has testicular cancer.
After he took the test, he was faced with a grim diagnosis. His doctor told him that he, unfortunately, had stage four testicular cancer that had spread to his abdomen and lungs. With it being at this stage, they knew they must act quickly.
He immediately began chemotherapy which, in time, proved to be working. He ended up having surgery to remove cancer and the surgery was successful. Six months after his grim diagnosis, Byron received news from his doctor that he was finally cancer-free! Stories like this just remind us to always trust our instincts with our bodies and seek medical attention if we feel something isn’t quite as it should be.
