Mothers are truly amazing. Although most animal qualities are easily distinguished from human qualities, when it comes to parenting, it seems that maternal and paternal instincts work just the same, regardless of the species. It’s a universal responsibility for parents to care for their young and nurture them into healthy, strong, and capable adults.

Whether you’re referring to humans or animals, it’s true that all mothers make it their mission to protect their children, especially in the earliest stages of the young one’s life when they are unable to fend for themselves. These defenseless babies need to be fully-protected so mom and dad provide food, shelter, and nourishment. I think it’s beautiful.

One of the most critical components of raising animals is their nest. Nests can be anywhere, really! While most are found high in trees or tucked away in bushes, almost anywhere is up for grabs in the animal’s world. Jack, a cop from McHenry County, Illinois, learned that animals really will go to any lengths to create a safe home for their babies.

On a day like any other, Jack went to drop of his squad car for its annual service. Not long after he left, he received a phone call from the mechanic. The mechanic had found something odd, although he didn’t quite know how to break the news to Jack.

Confused, Jack returned to the garage. The mechanic brought him around to the side of his car toward his front passenger tire. That’s when Jack noticed leaves - and lots of them. He gazed at the leaves, at the mechanic, then back at the leaves in disbelief. He was thinking, “Why in the world would there be leaves on the inside of my car?”

As he leaned in a little closer, he realized that the leaves were very carefully arranged and it was no accident that they were placed in his car. Shocked, he brushed the leaves over carefully to make sure he didn’t move whatever was being protected by the bulk greenery. When he finally caught a glimpse of the inside, he gasped in disbelief.

At first, Jack couldn’t quite make out what animals were in the car. First, he noticed their size, next he realized their shape. After a befuddled thought process, Jack came to the conclusion that these were newborn squirrels.

After realizing that he had four baby squirrels in the wheel well of his squad car, Jack and the mechanic devised a plan to get the animals safely back to their mama. They put the babies in a box while still in their nest, and very carefully drove back to Jack’s parking spot. Jack hoped that the mama squirrel would make it back to her babies, and he waited all night making sure she would. A couple hours later, mama had her sweet reunion with her precious little ones.

From that point on, the mama squirrel and the babies were given the protection of the McHenry County Police Department. Officers checked on the squirrels several times a day until the day came when the squirrels could finally leave the nest.

This is truly an amazing story! It shows both the maternal side of the mama squirrel along with the compassionate side of the humans. I am so happy that these squirrels were given a safe and protected nest by both their mama and the police officers!
