Marbles are one of the most timeless toys that have been winning the hearts of children since their invention in 1846. They’re a great way to entertain yourself or your kids, and you can spend hours coming up with all sorts of new games. There are endless possibilities with marbles, but one that most people would never consider would be music!

Wintergatan is a Swedish folktronica band from Göteborg that decided to use these wonderful little balls in a previously unused way! By turning a crank, marbles are carried to the top of the machine. Then, they fall in a wide variety of places on a handful of different objects, creating all of the different sounds you hear in the song!

Wintergatan musician, Martin Molin, built the machine with the help of Marcus Dimbodius, who gave helpful input on things like the conveyer belt and cymbal placement! Martin even composed the song (which was naturally named Marble Machine) by himself! It takes a lot of creativity to not only build the machine and compose the music but also to have come up with the idea in the first place!

Wintergatan originally posted the music video on YouTube on March 1, 2016, and it’s been widely shared since! In the 20 months since it was originally posted, it’s been watched over 60.5 million times, and has over one million likes! This is a rather unusual form of music, and personally, I’m hoping it catches on!
