Theirs is a love that started out as a friendship. The now-Queen of England first met her future husband when she was just 13 years old. They began to correspond by mail, and this lasted for several years until 1947, when they officially announced their engagement.

The couple married later that year on November 20th, and this year marks their 70th year of marriage. The Royal affair was held at Westminster Abbey and was the tenth Royal wedding to be performed there; the first was the wedding of King Henry I and Princess Matilda of Scotland in November 1100.

The Princess wore an exquisite gown made of ivory silk that was designed by Norman Hartnell. The beautiful dress is adorned with crystals and 10,000 seed pearls. The perfect gown was not something easily attained, however, due to World War II and clothing rations; the Princess had to save clothing coupons to get her dream dress.

The Royal wedding took place as millions listened to the ceremony over the airwaves, and thousands flocked to the streets for a glimpse of the Royal bride and groom. Later, after the nuptials, crowds waited for the happy couple to greet them at Buckingham Palace.

It was just five short years later that Elizabeth was coronated Queen Elizabeth II, and the young couple’s lives were changed forever. Philip has always been loyal to his wife-and-Queen and has loved her with an unwavering love.

Now, 70 years later, Her Majesty the Queen (91) and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (96) have reached a milestone that most marriages are unable to attain: their platinum wedding anniversary. They celebrated with a private party at Buckingham Palace, with only family in attendance. The two have lived a beautiful life together filled with love for one another, their family, and their country. We wish them many more years of happiness!
