These Feral Cats Are Given A Second Chance At Life. Instead of The Wild Life, They Now Live The Farm Life

Spokane, Washington, has a big problem, a big cat problem! The city is being overrun by feral and stray cats. It's not just Spokane, though. This problem is happening all over America and the rest of the world, too. There are about 3.4 million cats that enter animal shelters every year and, sadly, about half of that large number never see daylight again. Of course, we all wish that all of the helpless cats in the world could be adopted into a loving fur-ever family.

Many of the cats, however, are simply not adoptable because they are not just strays, they are feral cats. To combat this, the good people at the SpokAnimal animal shelter have started a program called Farm Livin'. The program is designed to give these wild cats a second chance at a long life without the need to be tamed and then adopted into a family. The cats are put to work on farms.

Farms and rural barn homes in the area, can contact the shelter and apply to have a cat or cats come and live in their barn. Before the cats are taken to their new home in the country, the shelter ensures that they are all spayed/neutered and are up-to-date on their vaccinations.

The person applying for the cats agrees to provide a barn, or another type of farm structure, in which the cats can take shelter from the elements. In return, the cat takes on the responsibility of keeping down the rodent population on the farm, something that can become a real bother when living in the country. The new "owner" must also provide food to supplement what the hunters catch.

Cats can go to the farms as young as 12 weeks old. While some of the cats are feral, that is not always the case. Some of the felines are more friendly than others but they are all accustomed to living independently.

While you may think that the cats would probably just run away from their new home, most of them don't go A.W.O.L, choosing to stay on in their new positions. This seems like a purr-fect solution to America's huge stray and feral cat problem.

SpokAnimals is not stopping in their own community, though. If you are interested in starting a Farm Livin' program in your area they will help you do that. Watch the video, below, to find out more about this wonderful program and how effective it is.
