Finding an animal in dire straits is an unnerving experience. In the U.S. most of us would go out of our way to help. But what about in other countries where the culture does not value dogs, cats, and other animals the way we do here?

Countries such as India have a horrendous overpopulation of stray animals and most residents consider them to be pests. If you are an animal lover, it’s hard to justify this type of philosophy; how can the value of an animal’s life be determined solely by geography? Either animals are inherently valuable, simply by virtue of their existence, or they are not. I choose to believe that they are all of value and deserve to receive whatever assistance they need in order to have the best life possible.

Our story takes place in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. A dog has fallen into a deep well and has no way to escape. She is seen clinging tenuously to a jagged rock ledge and it is evident that she is running out of strength.

She frequently loses her grasp and falls into the water; she struggles to swim, desperate to find a place where she can hang on and rest, but there is little available room. Eventually, she returns to the sharp edge where she is first seen, but her grip is slipping by the minute.

She has been there for a long time and is running out of strength. All at once, we see our heroes appear at the top of the well and begin gearing up to go to the animal's aid. The rescuers are from an organization called Animal Aid Unlimited who are doing their part to change the lives of abandoned or stray animals...no matter their circumstance. Animal Aid Unlimited has been coming to the aid of distressed animals since 2002. Their goal is to ignite community action by providing a helpline that residents can call to report a situation that needs intervention.

A man named Ganpat begins the perilous journey down the craggy face of the steep wall, moving slowly and deliberately, taking great care when placing his feet and hands. The last thing he wants is to sustain an injury himself, rendering him unable to help the poor pup - or plummet to the bottom and risk landing on the dog, injuring her further.

The men at the top are doing their part, as well, to make the trek a safe one for their friend in the well. They gingerly release more and more of the rope, giving Ganpat the slack he needs to safely continue his 70-foot descent.

Finally, the rescuer reaches the bottom of the well and makes his first contact with the exhausted canine. Somehow, she seems to understand that this man is her savior, showing no fear or resistance as he tries to get ahold of her.

Lovingly, and with great care, our hero gently places the pup in the safety of the strong net provided for her retrieval. Once she is secured, the men at the top begin pulling on the rope, in the final stage of the rescue - bringing her out of the well.

As I sit on the edge of my seat marveling as these amazing human beings save this sweet girl’s life, I begin to contemplate the magnitude of this incredible organization’s impact - not just for our girl, but for thousands of other needy animals, day in and day out!

In its 15 years in existence, Animal Aid Unlimited has rescued and treated over 65,000 animals. “Our ultimate goal is equality and protection of all animals and a complete end to the use and abuse of animals. We are working for the day that every dog, donkey, cow, pig, fish, and mouse can live their lives in freedom.” (https://animalaidunlimited.org/about-us/)

Once the pup reaches the opening at the top of the well, she is quickly transported, by motorcycle, to the shelter where medical professionals are waiting to determine the extent of the poor girl’s injuries and to give her the care she needs.

Trusting and compliant, the rescued canine submits to the ministrations of the shelter staff; she does not fight them, perhaps to demonstrate to her saviors just how grateful she is for all they are doing.

As soon as the doctors examine her paws, they realize just how close to death the pup was when she was freed from her watery prison. Her paws were raw and bleeding, apparently from her futile attempts to climb out of her abyss.

Rescuer Ganpat explains, “It looked like she’d been struggling in the water, trying to stay alive, for hours. She repeatedly grasped with claws we later found were bleeding, trying desperately to hold on to the only jagged piece of rock she could find.”

After an adequate time for healing, the sweet doggie is back to her old self. If she could speak, I’m sure she would be saying a big “Thank You” to Animal Aid Unlimited for what they did to give her a second chance at life. Ironically, A.A.U. does not consider what they do heroic. Instead, they give all the credit to the caring stranger who finds the animal and decides to do something about it. “Taking action is the pivotal experience that can change everything for good.”

Those of us who profess a love for animals claim we would do almost anything to help a furry friend in distress. How far would you go, however, if the situation were extremely dangerous? How much would you be willing to risk in the aid of a helpless four-legged creature? Most of us, however, will never find ourselves in that situation because of organizations like Animal Aid Unlimited who make it their mission to step in when no one else will.
