Sam took a special interest in the little bird and led the charge when it came to nursing Penguin back to health. Sam may not have been able to do some of the things she used to do, but she could take care of the little magpie and she did so with a joyful heart. With Sam's help, Penguin got stronger and stronger.
With Penguin improving day by day, the family noticed a change in Sam as well. Instead of depression, Sam exuded a new confidence and happiness. It was as if the old Sam had come back to life and her family was ecstatic. Both Penguin and Sam started to thrive, with each other's help.
When Sam would exercise, Penguin would exercise right beside her and every day the duo would get stronger. When Penguin was healed enough, the family tried to release her back into the wild but Penguin would always fly right back to the house. It seemed as though the bird had adopted the family as her own.
Penguin made the entire family laugh on a daily basis which, according to the dad, is what the family had been missing for quite some time. While the entire family loved Penguin, Sam was always the one that Penguin gravitated to the most. Maybe it was because Sam had given Penguin the strength to heal, so the bird wanted to return the favor.
Over time, Sam got stronger than she or anyone else ever thought possible with the help and encouragement of her family and Penguin. Sam got so strong that she was eventually recruited for a national kayaking team. Sam was ecstatic and her family was so proud. Penguin, however, did something rather peculiar that day.
The day that Sam was recruited, Penguin flew away and did not return. The family was sad but Sam knew why Penguin had gone. It was because Penguin had fulfilled her purpose. She had seen Sam succeed and was ready for her next adventure. Penguin was a guardian angel to Sam and her family.
