We all owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women who serve in our local law enforcement agencies and fire departments. Every day they risk their lives to protect not only our rights but, also, our very lives. One of my best friends is a local firefighter and he has told me the hours he works and the risks he has taken and it has given me a new respect for anyone who serves in that capacity. The firefighters in this story go above and beyond to make sure one furry family is not left behind after a hurricane.

After Hurricane Matthew hit the states, many local communities were left devastated without homes or vehicles. Communities were, quite literally, underwater. The flood damage in North Carolina was so bad that many people were forced to abandon not only their homes but their pets. The pets left to fend for themselves needed rescuing just as much as the people did.

One day, firefighters were trudging through the deep flood waters in neighborhoods all over North Carolina. The water was at least knee deep in every direction so it took the firefighters a long time to get anywhere on foot. This, however, was the best way to survey the damage without missing anything. When the firefighters reached a certain house, they could hear dogs barking close by. When the rescuers went around the back they saw a dog stranded on top of a truck, but he was not alone.
