A military plane crash in Algeria has become one of the deadliest incidents to happen in years, claiming over 257 lives in the tragic crash. The plane was taking off from a military base in Boufarik when it plummeted to the ground, crashing into a field near a crowded residential area.
The victims included 10 crew members and 247 passengers composed of mostly military members and their families. According to an Algerian official, there were also 26 members of Western Sahara’s Polisario independence movement.
The last recorded population count in Boufarik was 48,800 people in 1998, and the population has only grown since then. Had this plane made it much farther before crashing into the field, this tragedy could have been even more devastating.
The plane was a Russian-built Ilyushin II-76 aircraft. This model has been around since the 1970’s and has a very good record of safety, leaving people to wonder would have caused this accident. This model is often used to transport the military or large numbers of passengers in commercial flights.
Over 350 emergency workers quickly descended onto the scene, putting out the fire and removing bodies. Some of the bodies were covered with deep burns, likely the result of the fuselage catching fire.
According to witnesses, the plane had fire shooting from one engine as it took off, and was lurching in the air. When it came down, it landed on one wing, hard, and flames quickly took over.
While the official death toll has not been released, officials believe there are no survivors on the aircraft, and believe that all 257 lives were lost. Rescue workers have been seen carrying body after body away in body bags.
Please pray for the families of the victims as they face this truly horrific loss, and keep the rescue workers in your prayers as well as they come face to face with the results of this tragedy.
