The iconic game-show host of Jeopardy! has stopped millions of Americans in the footsteps after making a devastating announcement. On March 5th, 2019, Alex Trebek revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
The adored host shared his somber news on camera in what he said was an effort to be fully transparent with his audience. He shared, “Hi everyone, I have some news to share with all of you. And it’s in keeping with my longtime policy of being open and transparent with our Jeopardy fanbase. I also wanted to prevent you from reading or hearing some overblown or inaccurate reports regarding my health.”
Alex, 78, continued, “So, therefore, I wanted to be the one to pass along this information. Now, just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week I have been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.”
While the prognosis for stage 4 pancreatic cancer is not encouraging, Alex confirmed that he would be fighting to beat the statistics. He added, “And with the love and support of my family and friends, and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.”
To top off the somber news, Alex finished the announcement with a little bit of his adored humor, saying, “Truth told, I have to because, under the terms of my contract, I have to host Jeopardy! for three more years!” he joked. “So help me! Keep the faith, and we’ll win,” he concluded, “We’ll get it done. Thank you.”
Please keep Alex in your prayers as he’s about to embark on a difficult journey through treatment. We are praying for you Alex! You can watch his announcement below.
