On Friday, September 7th, 2018, Amber Guyger of the Dallas Police Department, walked into the wrong apartment. In a split second, tragedy struck.
Amber Guyger is a five-year veteran of the DPD. After working a full shift on Friday, she headed to her new apartment around 10 p.m. After walking up to the unit that she thought was hers, she walked in and saw an African American man walking around with the lights off.
Amber open fired twice.
Only seconds after shooting the man that she believed was in her apartment, allegedly, Amber quickly realized she was in a nightmare: she was in the wrong apartment and had likely just killed an innocent person.
Amber immediately called the police where she immediately confessed through tears: “I thought it was my apartment” and “I’m so sorry!”
The man that Amber shot was 26-year-old Botham Jean. Botham was immediately transported to Baylor University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Amber was taken in by the DPD where officials say that she mistakenly parked on the wrong floor in her apartment. According to the Dallas Morning News, the official shared that “Amber did not pick up on the discrepancy of a red doormat in front of Jean’s apartment — which her own residence did not have.”
The official continued, “Amber believed that Jean was a burglar and shot twice, striking him once, then called authorities. She was also seen outside the apartment crying while on the phone.”
The case has since made national news. Amber has been arrested and charged with manslaughter with her bail set at $300,000.
Botham’s full family has not been reached, although his sister did share her heartbreak on Facebook: “Now I have to go pick out your casket. I love you with all of my heart. … Until we meet again my love.”
Please pray for Botham’s family and Amber’s family. Little has been discovered about any malicious contempt behind Amber’s actions. Please pray for justice!
