The beloved game-show host of Jeopardy! has captivated millions of Americans for decades. After entertaining families through his television for years, he’s recently made headlines for a rather heartbreaking reason: pancreatic cancer.
On March 5th, 2019, Alex Trebek revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
The adored host shared his somber news on camera in what he said was an effort to be fully transparent with his audience. He shared, “Hi everyone, I have some news to share with all of you. And it’s in keeping with my longtime policy of being open and transparent with our Jeopardy fanbase. I also wanted to prevent you from reading or hearing some overblown or inaccurate reports regarding my health.”
Alex, 78, continued, “So, therefore, I wanted to be the one to pass along this information. Now, just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week I have been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.”
While the prognosis for stage 4 pancreatic cancer is not encouraging, Alex confirmed that he would be fighting to beat the statistics. He added, “And with the love and support of my family and friends, and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.”
After receiving millions of prayers from fans, it appears that Alex is, in fact, beating the low statistical rates! On May 29th, less than three months after his original announcement, Alex shared that his tumors were shrinking by more than 50%!
In an interview with PEOPLE, he shared “It’s kind of mind-boggling!” Although the cancer has a 9% survival rate, Alex Trebek has been responding very well to chemotherapy. “The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory…some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent.”
Please keep praying for Alex and his doctors as they journey through this rigous treatment. We are praying for you Alex! You can watch his announcement below.
