The calf, amazingly, made it through the cold night but was no closer to finding his mother or the herd. The herd had begun to move on because of a growing threat in the area. Wolves were on the prowl. In fact, a pack of wolves was fast approaching the area where the young bison was stranded. One young wolf spotted the calf, alone on the island. The thought of an easy meal was in his reach, so he moved in!
The young bison looked and saw the wolf approaching. He knew he could not escape so he did the unthinkable. Instead of running, the bison charged towards the wolf. The wolf was stunned at what was happening and began to struggle with the young bison.
All of a sudden, the wolf heard a sound behind him. Turning quickly, the wolf found himself face to face with the calf's mother! She had not moved on with the herd and had come to rescue her calf. The wolf immediately knew he was beaten and backed a considerable distance away. The calf, knowing his mother had returned to protect him, settled in for a long overdue meal, while the wolf had to go back to his pack, empty handed!
