It’s always a joyous occasion to welcome little animals into the family. They are so delicate and small, unsure of the great big world around them. Seeing an itty, bitty litter of squirming furballs can melt even the hardest of hearts with just one glance.
Mark and Elaine Cooper received the surprise of a lifetime when their beloved dog, Milly, went into labor for the first time. This was her first litter, and the Coopers could not wait to see the precious puppies, wondering just how many they’d have on their hands.
In no time at all, five puppies arrived happy and healthy. The Coopers were overjoyed! When they began looking closer at the pups, one happened to catch their attention.
Upon further inspection, it looked nothing like the others. The only girl of the litter was green. Yes, you read that right - bright green! As insane and preposterous as it may sound, it was true.
They couldn’t understand how a puppy, now named Fifi after the character Fiona in Shrek, could be born such an unnatural color. After a great deal of research, they discovered that while it is extremely rare, it is possible for a lighter colored puppy to come in contact with a substance in the placenta called Biliverdin.
According to sources: “The level of biliverdin in Fiona’s birth sac was uncommonly high, staining her fur. The condition is not dangerous, just rare.”
In a matter of weeks, the green will fade away. In the meantime, though, she’s definitely stealing all the attention from her brothers, and for good reason!
Milly isn’t the only dog that’s had this happen before. In Scotland, a woman named Louise Sutherland also got the biggest surprise possible when her golden retriever also gave birth to a green puppy.
“The first pup was stuck, so I and my daughter, Claire, managed to free him and pull him out safely. It was all hands on deck, but then, as the puppies started to arrive, we noticed that one of the puppies had green fur. We couldn’t believe it!” Sutherland told sources.
The green phenomenon puppy isn't such a rare thing~ we had our very own on Saturday evening when Harper delivered 9 beautiful puppies!!! It's just biliverdin in the sac that causes the green on their fur. He will be white in no time~ of course we did give him a green ribbon!!! #englishcreamgoldenretriever #whitegoldenretriever #greenpuppy
What do you think about this? Have you ever seen a dog colored in such a way before?
