The beloved Gold Girls star was honored by Saturday Night Live's Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin. Upon her entrance, they boldly referred to Better as “the greatest of all time” and it was clear that everyone else in the audience agreed as they let out a massive cheer.
When Betty took the stage, she was overwhelmed with gratitude. As she took a moment to gather her emotions while the crowd cheered, she finally revealed her shock by saying “Thank you! I’m just going to quit while I’m ahead!” She then pretended to walk off stage.
The crowd was beaming with admiration of Betty. She continued by saying, “Oh my goodness, goodness, goodness…This is… this is… this is very exciting.” It was clear she was overwhelmed with the massive support.
Betty when on to say that she was grateful- and surprised- to still be working in the entertainment industry. After 70 years, she’s made an undeniable mark on the world with her commitment to entertaining.
Just as she began to get emotional, Betty redirected speech- in true Betty White fashion- with a funny story. She added, “The other day about 'First Lady of Television.' And I took it as a big compliment.” As the crowd cheered, she added, “And then I heard her talking to her daughter a little later, she said, ‘First lady, yes, she's that old, she was the first one, way, way back.’” The crowd burst out laughing.
She added, “Little did I dream then that I would be here. It's incredible that I'm still in this business, that I'm still -- and you are still putting up with me!” The audience couldn’t help but smile.
Betty let the crowd enjoy her silly story before letting them catch their breath to move one. She became sentimental and ended her speech with a sweet thank you: “All I can say is, it's such a blessed business to be in, and how lucky can I be, and how much I say, thank you to each and every one of you. Thank you so much."
