12-Year-Old Boy Killed, 4 Others Injured When Alleged Drunk Driver Slams Mercedes Into Boy Scout Troop On Hike

October 02, 2018

The Boy Scout motto is “Be prepared” but there was no way this group of youngsters could have prepared for what happened to them as they were out hiking with their group. And one of the boys ended up losing his life in the completely unexpected and tragically devastating incident.

12-year-old Andrew Morris was killed and four of his friends were injured when an allegedly drunk driver plowed into a group of Boy Scouts who were walking together on a sidewalk. “Police said Murphy veered off the road and onto the sidewalk, slamming into a group of scouts from Troop 161, including Andrew McMorris, a 12-year-old seventh grader from Wading River who died from his injuries."

59-year-old Thomas Murphy admitted to having had three drinks at his county club before getting behind the wheel of his 2016 Mercedes. He is accused of “drunkenly crashing into a group of Boy Scouts who were hiking along David Terry Road in Manorville on Long Island, [New York] killing one and sending four to the hospital – was found at the scene reeking of alcohol and slurring his speech," police said.

The suspect was allegedly so inebriated that he was unaware of the seriousness of the situation. “I was coming from the Swan Lake Golf Club. Yes, I had three drinks,” Murphy told police shortly after the crash, the New York Post reported. “Are the kids OK?”

Murphy was taken into custody but refused to take a Breathalyzer test or chemical reading at the police station. He was, however, given a blood test once authorities obtained a court order.

Other boys injured were identified as brothers Denis Lane, 16, and Thomas Lane, 15; Kaden Lynch, 15, and Matthew Yakaboski, 15. All four remain hospitalized as a result of their injuries.

The 12-year-old who was killed, Andrew Morris, was keen to get his pilot’s license as soon as possible and was undergoing training toward that goal. “Just this past summer, the 12-year-old went to aviation camp and came home intent on becoming an astronaut.”

“The accused Murphy was charged with DWI and bail was set Monday at $250,000 cash or $500,000 bond. His license was suspended. Prosecutors said more charges against Murphy could be added.”

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of our Aero Campers. Andrew was with his Boy Scout troop in Manorville this past weekend and he and four others were hit by a person under the influence. Andrew worked hard during camp to complete his Boy Scout Aviation Merit Badge and we were so proud of him.

"We are saddened by this senseless loss and offer his family our deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with the familes of the other injured scouts and the entire troop who is dealing with this tragedy.”

Please join us in praying for Andrew’s family and for the boys who were seriously injured in the tragedy. Our hearts go out to them all…
