Students at the Florida International University in Miami requested a bridge for months in order to keep them safe from the busy road. When the bridge went in Saturday, March 10, everything seemed fine until it collapsed on Thursday, March 15, trapping multiple cars beneath it.

The bridge weighs 950 tons and has trapped an unknown amount of people beneath it, although people on scene can see the cars trapped beneath. People have taken to Twitter to share photos of the collapsed bridge, and reports of the incident came flooding in. Miami-Dade County confirmed the situation at 2:15pm on Thursday. Florida police have now confirmed multiple deaths due to the collapse, and at least one person has been taken to the hospital with trauma.

Emergency crews are on scene and are working to free the people trapped. The bridge had been put up over the weekend, closing the road while they worked on it. The bridge came following the death of a pedestrian in August 2017, who was struck by a vehicle as they attempted to cross the busy road.
