Those who know the story of the beloved Princess Diana know the characters just as well; there were her two sons, William and Harry, her husband, Charles, and of course, her husband’s mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles. And while the characters of Diana’s life have been discussed in great detail over the last several decades, one exchange has only just surfaced.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles first met in 1970. Three years later, Diana watched him at a polo match where they both began taking an interest in each other. From there, the rest- as they say- is history.
But Diana wasn’t the first girl to spot Charles at a polo match; Camilla met Charles seven years before in 1970 when they were just 22 and 23 years old. The two began dating but Camilla was quickly swept up by Andrew Parker Bowles. Camilla and Andrew married in 1973.
When Diana and Charles began dating, Diana was introduced to Camilla as a married woman and simple friend to Charles; she didn’t see Camilla as a threat whatsoever. In fact, the two were friends! Camilla even took Diana out for lunch to celebrate her engagement to Prince Charles.
But those who know the story, know that relational dynamics shifted dramatically in the coming years. When Prince Charles admitted that he and Camilla had a romantic relationship, Diana immediately felt threatened; she developed an eating disorder and became very insecure in her marriage and Prince Charles even began experiencing depression. Sources believe that Camilla reached back out to Charles “as a friend hoping to pull him from his depression,” but it was during that time that the romance between Prince Charles and Camilla rekindled.
After years of the ongoing affair, Princess Diana decided it was time to confront Camilla. Diana confronted Camilla one night at a party by saying, “I want my husband. I’m sorry I’m in the way… and it must be hell for both of you. But I do know what’s going on. Don’t treat me like an idiot.” However, Camilla showed no intention of stepping away from the wedding.
After that, Camilla took a low road and began calling Diana names. She’s reported to have referred to Diana as “a mouse” in the early days of their romance and later on, she referred to her as “that mad cow.” During her affair with Charles, Camilla recounts Diana being to be “hysteric” and “manipulative.”
The love story that started out so sweetly truly took a turn for the worse, and the world is still saddened by the reality of the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Di. Marriage is meant to be holy and sanctified, but tragically it promises are often overlooked. What do you think about this?
