Cherry Was Rescued From Michael Vick. Now He's Getting The Most Amazing Day Ever!
When Michael Vick was busted for dog fighting in April 2007, it shocked the country. No one had expected the Quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons to own a dog fighting kennel. At the time, the theory revolving around fighting dogs was that due to their background and breeding they would never be suitable for adoption into happy homes and they should just be euthanized.
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary refused to allow that to happen and they fought hard to save the lives of these dogs. The Sanctuary took on 48 dogs, 26 of which were able to be placed in foster homes immediately, the dogs with dog aggression, they became responsible for 22 dogs. Cherry was one of the harder dogs turned over to Best Friends and he was absolutely terrified. When they tried to walk him on a leash, he would flatten himself lower to the ground and crawl along.
John Garcia was the Best Friends Emergency Response Manager at the time and helped fly dogs from a Virginia shelter to the sanctuary in Utah. From the start he recognized that Cherry was different, and so he took the dog home from the start. Since then, Cherry has been working as a breed ambassador and has helped teach children about dog fighting and dogs! Cherry’s best day ever started with kittens! Cherry loves cats, and when he is around kittens in particular he seems to relax and be happier! So they set up a cute little tent and then brought him a bunch of kittens to play with! Cherry was super excited to be surrounded by the kittens and couldn’t stop wagging his tail! From there, he went to be an ambassador and got loved on by lots of kids!
After the amazing start to his day, Cherry got an even better surprise next. They took him to a bakery where they found special treats being sold in his name to help pay for his leg problems (his leg had to be amputated due to severe arthritis)! Cherry absolutely loves ice cream, so the bakery made him his very own dog safe ice cream sundae topped with treats galore - and a bone with his name on it!
Cherry’s best day ever ended with a beach party at their home! They even had special Doggy Beer with his name on it! Cherry got to run and play with his siblings - human and dog - at their very own Backyard Beach! They set up a pool and sprinklers and they all had a blast playing!
Cherry had a very rough start to his life, that’s for sure, but he never once let it hold him back in his life! He is now a beloved member of the Garcia family and he mentors his siblings carefully, and is the best dog he can be! Good Boy, Cherry!
