In 1981, the entire world anxiously awaited for the Prince of Wales to marry his bride, Lady Diana Spencer. On July 29th, 1981, the most iconic wedding in history happened in front of 750 million adoring viewers.

When Prince Charles met Diana, she was only a teenager. It didn’t take long for him to become smitten by her; she was different from other girls and Charles quickly noted that he wouldn’t find another like her. After a couple years of getting to know each other, Prince Charles proposed to Diana in February 1981.

The moment that Prince Charles asked Diana to be his wife was the moment her life changed forever. Prince Charles was the first in line to the throne and he was quick to remind Diana that one day she would be the British people’s Queen. In that moment, Diana felt her first true hint of tension. She heard a small voice say to her, “You won’t be queen but you’ll have a tough role.”

Only moments after Diana said yes to Prince Charles, she hugged him and confessed, “I love you so much, I love you so much.” Charles responded with a less than ideal statement, he said, “Whatever love means.”

For the next six months, Diana accompanied her future husband on royal engagements that allowed her to become known by the British People. She was instantly adored by all. If they affection for each other wasn’t clear, their approval by the people was more than obvious. The relationship was celebrated around the world and its support was so powerful to that many British people recall it be a unifying moment in history.

On July 29th, 1981, the world rejoiced as the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer said their vows in St Paul's Cathedral. While the couple didn’t seem overly enthusiastic about their big day, the British people were embracing and celebrating the nuptials like it was their own wedding.

Only three years into their marriage, Charles and Diana showed massive signs of distance and unhappiness. It’s no secret that the couple went on to live quite a sad marriage; between affairs, regret, loneliness, mental health and diseases, Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage ended in 1996. Their world was heartbroken at how their marriage played out, although looking back, it’s clear to see it never seemed destined to last, especially when you know to look for red flags.

In fact, just three months after their summer wedding, Prince Charles remembered his wedding day with a rather odd statement. He casually confessed, "We still cannot get over what happened that day. Neither of us can get over the atmosphere; it was electric, I felt, and so did my wife ... It made us both extraordinarily proud to be British."

That’s a rather odd way to recall one’s wedding; it wasn’t the first time he saw his bride, or when they exchanged vows, or even when they kissed. Rather, it was the cheers that rang through the town that fed his pride in being British.

What do you think about this? Do you think Prince Charles’ confession is a red flag of the tension and distance between the famous couple? Let us know in the comments.
