As more details are coming to light on the horrific slaying of pregnant mom Shannan Watts and her two daughters, accused murderer and Shannan’s husband Chris Watts is telling his side of the story. In new shocking reports, Celeste and Bella’s dad floats an unbelievable version of how the terrible event unfolded.
Although he has not officially entered a plea in the tragic triple murder case, Chris Watts has allegedly admitted to only part of the crime.
A legal expert tells PEOPLE, "The defense for accused triple-murderer Chris Watts might base their strategy on the suspect’s claim that his slain wife — and not Watts himself — killed their two young daughters.
“The jury’s going to make a determination whether to believe him or not,” says Ambrosio Rodriguez, a former prosecutor who is now a criminal defense lawyer and is not connected to the case. “If a jury believes him, he’s going to walk.”
People is reporting about the shocking turn of events: “Chris allegedly acknowledged to investigators that he strangled Shanann, according to an arrest affidavit. The incident allegedly occurred in the early hours of Aug. 13, when Shanann had returned home from a business trip.”
The accused murderer claims that he and his wife had a discussion about his alleged affair and that Chris told Shanann he wanted a separation. Then, according to Mr. Watts, he left the house for a short period of time, only to return to a horrific scene.
He said that he saw Shanann “via a baby monitor ‘actively strangling’ Celeste, 3, while Bella, 4, lay ‘sprawled out on her bed and blue,’ according to the affidavit."
Chris then claimed that he lost it and 'went into a rage' killing his wife because of what she had done.
Shanann’s family members tell a different story, claiming that the 4-months-pregnant woman was the one who wanted to leave and that Chris wasn’t going to stand for it.
To add confusion to the mystery, Shanann's own words defy the prosecutors' allegations: On social media, Shanann spoke as though she and Chris had an idyllic life together, so it is unclear when the marriage took its final turn. On Valentine’s Day just six months before the murder, Shanann was singing her husband’s praises.
“I love this man more than words can say! He’s my Rock, my love, my biggest fan, supporter and my husband! I couldn’t of hand picked a better man to call my husband and father to our girls! He dreams Big with me, he runs hard with me and he is just flat out friggin awesome! I love you Chris so much! Happy Valentines Day!”
So whether it was Chris or Shannon who initiated the end of their marriage, it remains a mystery exactly what pushed the family over the edge. Regardless of whether the little girls lost their lives at the hands of their mother or their father, the entire tale is one of complete and utter tragedy.
Time and evidence will, hopefully, give the answers to these disturbing questions, and in the meantime, we extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends who lost so much in one horrible act.
