On May 19th, 2018, the wedding of the century happened between Britain’s Prince Harry and America’s Meghan Markle. The wedding was truly an incredible day in history; with more than 2 billion live streamers and 600 guests, the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex invited the world to celebrate their wedding day as a beautiful and iconic moment in history.
Guests ranged from local charity heads to famous superstars, including Sir Elton John, Oprah Winfrey, and Serena Williams. Although perhaps one of the most recognizable guests included mega-actor, George Clooney.
Wedding watchers were stunned to see George Clooney and his wife, Amal walking arm-in-arm to the Harry and Meghan’s wedding. But their attendance was even more surprising when the couple had front seats at the head of church- which was reserved for the closest family and friends of the couple.
Since their attendance at the wedding, rumors of the couple’s friendships have been speculated. While no one really knew Clooney was a friend of either Harry or Meghan, Clooney has set the record straight that he is in full support of the most criticized couple in the world.
On March 15th, 2019, the star, 57, confessed to a British morning show that he believed Meghan was being treated unfairly by the media. The star added, “I think it’s a little unfair at times when – I’ve seen it when the press can turn on you for sort of ridiculous reasons and for almost nothing, and it seemed to me to be a little unjust since [Meghan] hadn’t done anything except just happen to live her life. Most of it you can just shrug off and not pay attention to, but sometimes it’s unkind.”
This wasn’t the first time Clooney had come to Meghan’s rescue. Earlier in 2019, he stated that he believed she was being pursued and vilified. He said, “They’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere. “She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it’s history repeating itself.”
Before ending his thoughts on the matter, he warned the media by saying, “We’ve seen how that ends.” Of course, he was referring to the tragic death of Princess Diana- a woman who was also obsessively pursued and vilified and ultimately found dead in a tragic accident.
Let George Clooney’s confession remind you that Meghan Markle- regardless of your opinion of her- is a person; a person who deserves to be respected simply because they exist. Remember to be kind in how you choose your wards towards anyone- especially someone who you’ve never met.
