When 13-year-old Courtney Hadwin arrived at America’s Got Talent, she was so anxious she could hardly stand still. The young girl watched as brave individuals before her stepped out on the stage in front of four intimidating judges and thousands of expectant viewers. As she watched some participants get ripped apart by the judges, she began to doubt herself.
When it was finally Courtney’s turn, she shyly scuttled onto the stage with her head down. There was no doubt about it- she was terrified.
The judges could tell that she was scared and attempted to break the tension by asking her questions. Mel B asked “How are you?” to which Country uttered, “A little bit nervous.” Mel B’s promptly encouraged by saying it’s was okay to be nervous, but Courtney didn’t seem to ease up- not even a little bit.
The crowd and judges watched Courtney squirm in uneasiness; surely, they were becoming anxious as well. Not knowing if the young girl was about to embarrass herself entirely, they listened to her share about how she loved to study music.
Not expecting much, the judges sent her off into her audition. Courtney took a couple steps back, took her starting stance with her feet apart and an arm behind her back, and looked down at the ground.
Just as Otis Redding's “Hard to Handle” came over the speakers, Courtney began dancing! But just seconds later, the real magic happened…
Courtney let out a wild “Hey” before literally transforming into a fiercely exceptional performer! Every single judge dropped their jaws at Courtney’s performance as they had never seen anything like it before!
Howie Mandel was exceptionally blown away by the performance! He went on to compare her to Janis Joplin where he admitted that he wouldn’t be able to give her a record deal, but what he could do was give her the biggest honor in the competition: The Golden Buzzer!
Courtney was totally shocked as gold confetti fell all around her. Her father ran out on the stage and picked her up in the biggest and proudest hug- it was a magical moment!
