'Critical Detail' Left Out Of Report About Man Arrested While Driving Pregnant Wife To Hospital - And It Changes Everything

August 20, 2018

Over the weekend, the media caught hold of a story that was sure to pull at everyone’s heartstrings, and now we’re finding out that everything was not as it seemed. In the most widely-spread photo, we see the woman in tears inside a convenience store making a phone call to an unknown person.

Headlines across the country rang out with indignation with these or similar words, "ICE Arrests Husband Taking Pregnant Wife to Hospital to Give Birth, Forcing Her to Drive Alone." Sounds pretty bad, I'll admit.

Although the woman was heading to the hospital to deliver her baby, she was not in labor; she was heading in to check in for a scheduled cesarean section. While it was undoubtedly a surprising and upsetting situation, the mother was in no danger of having her baby alone on the side of the road.

New York Magazine reports, "On Wednesday, agents arrested Joel Arrona-Lara, a 36-year-old [illegal border crosser] from Mexico, as he was escorting his wife to the hospital for a planned cesarean section in San Bernardino, California. Hours later, María del Carmen Venegas gave birth to her fifth child without Arrona by her side. (The news of his arrest was only widely reported days later.)"

The article led readers to believe that the woman was in active labor and had to drive herself to the hospital amid agonizing labor contractions and that the husband was arrested merely for being undocumented.

Not the case at all. In fact, Mrs. Lara wasn’t even in labor but was on her way to check in for a planned cesarean section - and the husband has an outstanding murder warrant in his native Mexico. Sounds like a completely different story when you know all the facts!

According to New York Magazine (and many other outlets) “In an initial statement, ICE said that Arrona-Lara was awaiting deportation proceedings, but did not delve into the reasoning behind his arrest.

In a second statement released later on Saturday, the agency said that he is wanted for murder in Mexico. “ICE continues to focus its enforcement resources on individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety, and border security,” that statement read.

No matter which side of the political spectrum you identify with, one thing's for certain. This type of inflammatory coverage only serves to cause more division among Americans, and that's something we do NOT need more of. We hope that, in the future, media outlets will be sure to check all the facts before tackling such a sensitive subject.
