Death Row Inmate Released After 25 Years

April 20, 2018

68-year-old Vicente Benavides has spent the last 25 years of his life on Death row, awaiting punishment for the rape and killing of his girlfriend’s almost two-year-old daughter. Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that false medical testimony was presented at his trial, and he was then released from custody.

Vicente was charged with the November 1991 death of Consuelo Verudo. He had been left in charge of her on November 17, 1991, while his girlfriend went to work. According to Vicente, he lost track of her, and later discovered her lying injured outside.

They raced her to the hospital where she died a week later. According to a forensic pathologist and several doctors, she had been sexually assaulted. Later, almost all of them recanted their statements, stating that they had not seen her full medical records.

When the little girl was first hospitalized, there wasn’t even any record of her being sexually assaulted. According to the doctors who recanted, it was also possible that the injuries had been caused by her medical treatments.

In fact, the purported cause of death was deemed as “anatomically impossible” according to some of the experts. One expert even said that it was likely that the child had been struck by a vehicle.

According to Kern County District Attorney, they won’t likely retry him for first-degree murder as they don’t have sufficient evidence. Hopefully Vicente will now have the chance to live a good life, and he can overcome the 25 years spent on Death Row.

This is a horrible story, and we know that sometimes we need a reminder of the good in the world at a time like this, so be sure to check out the video below!
