Darnell Simmons had spent his life raising his family in Chicago. For twenty years, Darnell worked for the Streets and Sanitation Department as a laborer, working hard to support his family. Simmons was stopping by the store to buy a lottery ticket as he took his teenage son to the airport.
As Darnell, his son, and another teenager left the store, gunfire erupted. Darnell shoved his son out of the way, and his son did not yet realize what he had just done. Darnell’s son believed that his father had merely tripped, but when he turned around, he discovered that Darnell had been shot in the chest and shoulder.
He was rushed to the Stroger Hospital, where he was eventually pronounced dead. Darnell’s son was on his back to Texas as his Spring Break wrapped up, and now he is dealing with the loss of his father. Simmons gave his life to save his son, and without his immediate decision, Simmons would likely have had to have been burying his son. Please, keep this family in your prayers as they deal with their horrible loss.
This is a horrible story, and we know that sometimes we need a reminder of the good in the world after a horrible time like this, so be sure to check out the video below!
