24-year-old Anthony Burgess Jr. was visiting a friend at their apartment in Indianapolis when disaster struck. Anthony was outside talking to his 28-year-old friend, Bobby Malone, while his 3-year-old daughter remained inside of the car. The little girl tried to crawl out of the car to come talk with them, but Anthony asked her to remain inside. As she crawled back to her seat, she managed to bump the gear shift, putting the car into reverse.
The car rolled backward into the pond behind them, his daughter trapped inside. Neither Anthony or Bobby knew how to swim, but that didn’t stop them from racing into the water after the car. Bobby was forced to turn back by the deepening water, but Anthony continued. He reached the car before it was fully submerged, having his daughter climb into the back seat where he could reach her.
After retrieving his daughter, Anthony began to struggle towards the shore. Luckily, a nearby bystander was there and took her from him, able to carry the little girl to safety. Unfortunately, he didn’t know how to swim either and he was unable to get back to Anthony before he went under. When responders finally arrived, it was too late to save him. Anthony died, saving his little girl’s life without even taking a moment to hesitate and consider the risk to himself. Anthony Burgess Jr. was a wonderful father who we should all remember for his dedication to his daughter.
