In the early hours of Sunday, March 18, life was forever changed for many families when an apartment building in Springfield, Illinois, went up in flames. The two-fire alarm quickly engulfed the building. It was originally reported at 7:20 am, but by the time firefighters arrived there five minutes later, the second floor was burning as well.
One of the men who was living in the apartment building met an unfortunate end in the fire. He had fled the flames and made it safely outside, only to realize that his son and daughter were still trapped. Without a second thought, he raced back into the burning fire in the hope of saving his children. Unfortunately, none of them would make it out.
The names of the victims are not being released, but the fire department did confirm that they found the bodies of three people in the rubble. Seven other residents were hospitalized following the fire, including three people who had to make a horrifying choice. A man, child, and a pregnant woman were left with no choice but to jump into the bushes below from the third floor in the hopes of escaping.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. It is believed to have caused at least $100,000 in damages to the building and the belongings of the victims. Please keep the families and friends in your prayers as they need it the most at this time.
