The newly minted Duchess of Sussex just made history!
On June 14th, 2018, the Duchess of Sussex and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth embarked on their very first solo journey together! The Duchess’ first official travel since becoming Royalty brought her to Cheshire with her grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth!
The solo trip has gotten non-stop attention since it’s announcement for many reasons; the Cheshire trip is the most north of England Meghan has gone since meeting Prince Harry, the trip is Meghan’s first office traveling appointment since becoming royal, and the solo trip came much more quickly than her sister-in-law's, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Many were left wondering: Why is Meghan getting this fantastic opportunity so early on?
Rumors began to swirl that Meghan and the Queen were quickly becoming as “thick as thieves,” just as Harry had expected Meghan to get along with his late mother, Princess Diana. During the couples engagement interview, Prince Harry admitted that Meghan and his grandmother immediately connected.
Meghan mentioned that getting to know Queen Elizabeth as his grandmother was just as important as getting to know her as a royal figurehead. Surely, she would get a chance to know Her Majesty in a new capacity while traveling with her!
Another rumor is that royal advisors suggested the trip. After rumors that the pair of leading ladies were not getting along, royal advisors thought it would be “good PR” to make the solo trip happen.
While both of those reasons have circulated the internet, we’ve finally got the real reason for Meghan’s solo trip with the Queen! The best part, it’s not what anyone has suspected!
Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary, Charles Anson, confirmed with People that the Queen herself personally requested this trip! And the reason why is very simple! The Queen is “helping immerse Meghan into royal public engagements.”
Charles continued: “It is the way of the royal family—all part of the training and getting used to being in public life and under public scrutiny...Showing people the ropes is a high priority for the Queen.”
While Meghan won’t learn everything in one experience, the Queen is making sure to make Meghan a top priority- in family and work. On biographers shared “The Queen knows the potential pitfalls of not giving [new members] a guiding hand. She can’t expect Meghan to know everything without being shown. I’m sure she feels Meghan needs a steadying hand in these early days.”
We think that is just amazing! The Queen is going above and behind to make sure Meghan will have the best possible entry into the Royal Family. We can’t help but be thrilled for the Duchess’ journey!
