The wedding of Luke and Laura. One of the most-watched television events in history marked the long-awaited union of daytime TV’s favorite couple. When the star-crossed lovers finally made it to the altar, millions of fans dropped everything to watch the televised dramatic nuptials.
Of course, being a soap opera, things couldn’t possibly go as planned, with the dramatic event ending with the newlyweds going on the run. The couple were the darlings of daytime television from 1977 when Genie Francis joined the show all the way up until Anthony Geary, who played Luke, finally left the show in 2015.
Now, with Luke having been gone for several years, perhaps fans cannot accept Laura without her soulmate. For whatever reason, the powers-that-be at ABC have decided to end Francis’ “regular” status on the show and have reduced her role to “recurring.”
Consequently, “Laura Spencer” will once again be leaving Port Charles, and her return in the future is doubtful. According to Francis’ agent, Arthur Toretzky, the star would return only if the storyline and surrounding circumstances were “ideal.”
Clearly, her feelings have been hurt and she is not happy about her release. “She did not want to leave the show as a series regular,” Toretzky explains, “It was not her choice to leave.” Neither are her fans too happy about the move. Many of them took to social media to protest the decision.
Speaking for the millions of General Hospital fans throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, we wish Genie Francis all the best. And although we will miss seeing her smiling (and sometimes tear-stained) face on a daily basis, we know that her talent will continue to take her far.
