GPS Blamed For Horrific Crash That Killed British Family Of 4 Vacationing In Florida

April 05, 2018

A family of four from Bristol in England who were vacationing in Florida were killed in a devastating motor vehicle crash while returning to their rental home after visiting the Kennedy Space Center.

Victims have been identified as 30-year-old Adam Stephenson, 39, the driver of the small white rental car, his wife Maryanne, 29, and Adam's parents, Bryan Stephenson, 59 and his 56-year-old wife, Sheralyn.

The accident happened when a ‘"heavy-duty black Ford pickup truck smashed into the British family's rented Mitsubishi Sedan after they turned left at an intersection and straight into the truck's path, police said."

The driver of the pickup truck, James Walsh, 28, was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. He told police that “there was nothing he could do” to avoid the collision.

According to the Mirror, “One hour before the deadly the crash, the family had watched SpaceX launch its Falcon 9 rocket from the Space Center, police said.”

The Titusville, Florida Police Department said that the "violent collision" is still under investigation.

Data taken from the Mitsubishi’s GPS indicates that the device had “instructed the driver to make a U-turn at the intersection where the family fatally crashed,” officers said.

The Mirror reports that “police speculate that the device may have re-routed the family, instructing them to make the turn to avoid traffic caused by an earlier car crash in the area.”
