American singer, songwriter, and actor, Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis and the News, shared terrible news with his fans on Friday, April 13th, 2018. Only weeks before heading out on his 2018 tour, he canceled all shows after informing fans that he was going deaf after doctors feared he was suffering from Meniere’s disease.
Huey took to Twitter sharing the heartbreaking news in a thoughtful message to his fans saying:
Two and a half months ago, just before a show in Dallas, I lost most of my hearing. Although I can still hear a little, one on one, and on the phone, I can’t hear music well enough to sing. The lower frequencies distort violently making impossible to find pitch. I’ve been to the House Ear Institute, the Stanford Ear Institute, and the Mayo Clinic, hoping to find an answer. The doctors believe I have Meniere’s disease and have agreed that I can’t perform until I improve. Therefore the only prudent thing to do is cancel all future shows. Needless to say, I feel horrible about this. And wish to sincerely apologize to all the fans who’ve already bought tickets and were planning to come see us. I’m going to concentrate on getting better, and hope that one day soon I’ll be able to perform again.
Huey shared his heartbreak and regret publicly with fans and hoped that they would understand. While he was sincere, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that he should take the doctor’s advice and rest.
According to online sources, the ear disease that he is suffering from, Meniere’s, causes a great deal of pressure and pain in the ear. It can also cause severe dizziness and vertigo. It also produces a disturbing ringing in the ear known as tinnitus.
While the disease is severely disruptive, it is treatable if the proper steps are taken, which is why every doctor that Huey has seen has suggested time off from performing.
As a musician, going deaf is one of the most frightening things that can possibly happen. Please keep Huey in your prayers! If you are a Huey Lewis fan, share your favorite song in the comments!
