Now that the fairytale wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is one for the history books, we can look back on what we saw and begin to ask questions that we maybe did not think to ask at the time. One big question in many people’s minds is why the mother of the bride sat all by herself all the way across the aisle from the rest of the couple’s guests.
We all know the tradition of “bride’s family/friends on the left, groom’s on the right” but the utter lack of support and representation on Meghan’s side of the chapel have many people asking, “Why?” The lovely mother of the bride sat there, proud, emotional, happy, and alone. Not a single companion to share the moment with. Looking back, we need to know what brought about this sad turn of events.
Many publications are reporting the reason behind the odd seating arrangement and what they have to say is not at all what we expected to hear.
Standard Media explains that “Doria’s sitting position was Meghan’s and Harry’s doing. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were in charge of deciding who sat where during the ceremony.
“It is also likely that the two were following the Royal traditions by having Ragland sit on the left side as the groom’s close family members sat on the right side of the chapel.
“Doria, 61, who was teary as Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, said their vows, kept stealing the show with her graceful posture despite being the only member of Meghan’s family in attendance.”
I don’t know about you, but it seems awfully strange - and sad - that there was not a single aunt, uncle, cousin, grandparent, niece, or nephew that could be found within Doria’s side of the family with whom Meghan gets on well. If this is true, then the scene seems even more tragic.
Meghan’s father was a last-minute no-show for the nuptials, citing health issues as the reason he could not travel to St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on May 19th. Prince Charles, father of the groom then stepped in and did the honor of walking the bride down the aisle in Mr. Markle’s stead.
Looking at Doria sitting all alone in the pew was gut-wrenching. I can only imagine that she would have preferred that someone she knows had been sitting there next to her. Even sadder is the fact that, apparently, she has no one in her life that could have filled that role.
Regardless of the conspicuous nature of her seating position at the wedding, Doria Ragland managed to inspire admiration among spectators who couldn't help but notice the strength, dignity, and class in which she took in the splendid wonder of her daughter marrying a prince and becoming royalty, herself.
In spite of all the drama and speculation, Harry and Meghan are officially married. To re-live the moment that they were pronounced man and wife, watch the video, below.
