It was a typical Friday night for high school football fans as rival teams from neighboring counties in Georgia met for a favorite fall event. But the evening did not go as a typical gridiron game should and instead ended in tragedy for one member of the squad.
A 16-year-old linebacker was running a play when he collided with another player, and the resulting blow did more than just knock the wind out of him. Now family and friends are demanding answers into how things could have gone so wrong.
Dylan Thomas was a junior at Pike County High School in Zebulon, which is about an hours’ drive south of Atlanta, On Friday, Pike County played against a varsity team from Peach County High School.
According to Fox5 Atlanta, "Thomas had been playing for the Varsity team against the Peach County team when he was hurt. His uncle told FOX 5 that Thomas was hit in the second quarter and then got back on the field. He said while he was sitting on the sidelines, his arm and leg went numb and then he collapsed."
"Thomas was taken by ambulance to WellStar Spalding Regional Hospital in nearby Griffin before being airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment for severe brain swelling. Doctor’s performed two surgeries on his brain to try to get a handle on the swelling. He held on throughout Saturday but remained in a coma. Dylan succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night, according to WMAZ-TV."
