TMZ is reporting that Sean Penn and Robin Wright's son, Hopper, has been arrested in Nebraska for illegal possession of drugs, shocking his parents who thought he had been clean and sober for at least a year.
Hopper Penn and his passenger, Uma von Wittkamp, were pulled over for failure to signal. During the traffic stop, the police officer "detected drug activity and searched the car." That's when the contraband was discovered.
"We're told police say they found 14 grams of marijuana, four amphetamine pills, and three grams of shrooms. The 24-year-old actor was booked for the mushrooms and less than an ounce of marijuana. Uma was booked for the amphetamines, as well as the shrooms."
No one knows what this means with regard to prison time, but their prior records will certainly come into play when the judge makes his decision.
With this shocking and unexpected turn of events, Hopper's friends and family are worried, and with good reason, because Penn's sobriety was hard-fought after having struggled with substance abuse for years.
At the time of his first recovery, Hopper attributed his success to his father, Sean Penn, for using a "tough love" approach to help him get through the tough process. Only time will tell how the senior Penn will react to his son's current slip-up.
We know that sobriety is a life-long battle and that many people suffer devastating relapses before they make their final recovery.
It's an insidiously difficult course to maintain, but there are many who are able to do it - with persistence and by taking it "one day at a time."
We pray that this most recent event is merely a bump in the road for Hopper and that he finds a way to overcome this demon and get clean and sober again, once and for all.
