On a chilly day in Roscoe, Illinois, a man and his dog were out enjoying a fresh snowfall, when they saw a lake out in the distance. The lake looked frozen over enough that the dog ran out toward the middle of it.

Just moments after the dog hit the ice, he slid further into the middle of the lake. Tragically, the ice began to crack and then within moments, the poor dog fell into the water. Ice around the dog began to crack and it was only a matter of seconds before the dog was completely submerged.

The man immediately lept into action when he saw the ice break beneath his dog. Luckily, there was a canoe nearby and the man was able to grab it and paddle toward his dog. As soon as he started paddling towards his drowning pup, he too fell through the ice.

Thankfully, someone saw the tragedy and called for help. Within minutes, first responders arrived. They quickly managed to save the man. However, the dog was further out and much harder to get to.

Lt. Justin Mayton with the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department put on a cold-water suit and fastened a safety rope around him. He immediately jumped into the lake and swam toward the dog.

The man was able to get to the dog just in time! He grabbed the animal and fastened it to his cold-water suit. Together, they were pulled to safety by the firemen waiting on the lake bank.

Thankfully, the dog and the man were given the care they needed and were able to go home! We are so thankful for the firefighters who risked their lives to save this man and his dog! They are heroes!
