With all the recent hoopla over Prince Harry asking Prince William to be his best man, the natural expectation would be that the next announcement out of Kensington Palace would be the name of Meghan Markle’s maid of honor. All kinds of names have been bandied about - from childhood best friends to college confidantes to Hollywood cohorts to even the Duchess of Cambridge.
All of it building the excitement and anticipation for the expected announcement of just who would have the honor of standing next to Meghan Markle when she weds her Prince Charming at St. George’s Chapel at high noon on May 19th.
That’s why so many of us, especially those of us in the U.S. who are accustomed to the presence of a maid of honor at every wedding, were washed with a wave of utter disappointment when we heard the latest news coming out of the Palace.
To everyone’s huge surprise, the official word is that even though Harry will have his brother serving as his Best Man, Meghan will NOT do likewise.
How odd that seems to many of us who have had the important task of selecting just the right lady to do the honors, and for most of us the choice was obvious. For me, and for many other brides, it was my sister, For others, it is a lifelong friend who has been through thick and thin with them.
This most recent announcement about the Royal wedding has left many of us wondering what could have held Meghan back from picking that special someone to stand up with her at her wedding.
We all know that her family relationships are strained, to put it mildly, and her only sister (half-sister) has been very outspoken about her less-than-flattering feelings about her little sis. So, check that one off the list.
Many reports were stating (perhaps wishful thinking?) that the Duchess of Cambridge would be the perfect choice. But since Kate just gave birth (it will have been less than four weeks since, at the time of the wedding) she would most likely not accept the honor.
Then the name of Priyanka Chopra was dropped. Priya has enjoyed a long-standing friendship with the American actress. Chopra will attend the wedding but not as Maid of Honor.
As recently as this week, reports were circulating that Meghan’s college friend, and bestselling author, Lindsay Roth was tapped to fill the coveted role.
Meghan had served as Roth’s maid of honor at her Greek wedding two years ago, so it was believed that Lindsay would return the favor. Again, Roth will attend, but will not serve as M.O.H.
So, what’s the deal? Well, now that we know it seems to make a lot of sense. In an announcement coming out of Kensington Palace, we find out the answer to one of the last-remaining mysteries of the Royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Well, now we know! Press Secretary Jason Knauf announced that Markle will not have a Maid of Honor because she “has a very close-knit circle of friends and she didn’t want to choose one over another.”
According to People Magazine, “All [of her friends] have been actively involved in helping her prepare for the day and will be there in the days beforehand. She’s very happy to have their support.
“Meghan will not have a traditional American-style bridal party — royal weddings usually have younger attendants who serve as page boys and bridesmaids.
"The palace revealed that Meghan will be joined by her little bridal party members (Prince George and Princess Charlotte are expected to have roles!) before she walks into the chapel. The names of her page boys and bridesmaids will be released in the days before the wedding.”
So there you have it. One more bit of evidence that Meghan “isn’t in ‘Kansas’ anymore!” Day-by-day, the bride-to-be is becoming less and less the America actress, and more-and-more the British Princess.
And we wish her all the very best as she makes this dramatic change in her life!
