Since becoming engaged to the world’s most eligible bachelor in 2017, Meghan Markle has become an international sensation.
Today, nearly a year into marriage and in the last trimester of her pregnancy, Meghan, now formally known as the Duchess of Sussex, is learning to navigate the dark side of being famous. Her name headlines on nearly every major media outlet, and many times she’s bullied with mistruths from critics.
Meghan has only outwardly addressed the criticism once during her engagement interview. Just minutes after happy news, Harry and Meghan confirmed their engagement in the highly anticipated engagement interview. During the interview, Meghan touched on the topic by saying that because she worked in the entertainment industry, the tabloid culture was not something that “she was familiar with.” She went on to say that, from the beginning, their relationship had been hit with a lot of mistruths.
She continued by admitting that the bullying surrounding her ethnicity, history, and character was “disheartening.” Since then, Meghan has handled her constant criticism in tabloids with grace, and after more than a year of feeling the effects of being the center of misdirected negative attention, Meghan’s best friends are making it their mission to reveal the truth of the woman that they know and love.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, five of Meghan’s closest friends revealed that they had decided enough was enough and that they would “stand up against the global bullying we are seeing and speak the truth about their friend.”
A former co-star addressed the topic by correcting the bullies. She said, “Meg has silently sat back and endured the lies and untruths. With Meghan and her husband expecting their first child this spring, we worry about what this is doing to her and the baby.” She adds, “It’s wrong to put anyone under this level of emotional trauma, let alone when they’re pregnant.”
Another friend added that she had recently visited Harry and Meghan in their cottage. She shared, “We had a couple of days together recently. Her husband was out of town on work. In the room she made up for me, there was a candle lit by the bed, slippers and a robe. We were the only two in the house. It was our time. She made the most lovely meals. She made tea every day. It was raining and muddy outside, so the dogs got all dirty, and she’s wiping them off with towels. How much she loves her animals, how much she loves her friends, how much she loves feeding you, taking care of you — none of that has changed.”
The former co-star also responded to the criticism Meghan gets while out on walkabouts. She added, “When you see her at walkabouts, when she crouches down to talk to the kids and genuinely has real conversations with people, that’s Meg. That’s how she crouches down with our kids at home. That’s how she plays with them. That’s how she engages with people and how she always has.”
Those who truly know Meghan know that she is honest and genuine. She is a selfless friend that has been tragically misidentified in the media. Whether you are a fan or not, it’s important to remember that Meghan Markle is a person; a real person with feelings, insecurities, strengths, and more than you may ever know. Be kind and be gracious.
