A horrific car crash took place in Brooklyn on Monday, March 5, that claimed the lives of two children and injured their mothers. The two children, a four-year-old and a one-year-old, had been out for a walk with their mothers, Broadway Star and Tony award-winning actress Ruthie Ann Miles and her friend, Lauren Lew, when their lives were ended much too young.
They were struck by a vehicle as they used a crosswalk. The 2012 white Volvo then attempted to flee the scene, but ultimately came to a stop, the stroller still stuck under the wheels, after striking 6 more vehicles.
Andrew Macaluso, a fourth-year medical student was one of the first on the scene, as he’d been passing by when the incident occurred. Lew, the mother of the one-year-old began to give air while Macaluso gave chest compressions, and they attempted to save the child’s life. Unfortunately, both children were declared dead at the scene. The pregnant mother of the four-year-old child, Ruthie Ann, was also struck and injured.
Police arrested the driver, a 44-year-old woman, at the scene. She claimed to have suffered a “medical impairment”, but the police are still investigating. They do not believe they were struck down purposely, however. No matter the cause of this accident, two children lost their lives, and Ruthie may yet lose her unborn baby as well. This horrific accident is one that will impact lives for decades to come. Please send your prayers to these families in their time of need.
