Almost since the very day Meghan and Harry became engaged, people began speculating about this one aspect of the bride and groom’s wedding ceremony. Since Meghan is American, the couple realized that there might be a few bumps along the way to making decisions about both the ceremony itself and the couple’s life after. So we were eager to find out just how they would handle their cultural conflicts.
One of the hot topics was the question about whether or not Prince Harry would wear a wedding ring. In the U.S. it’s more common than not for both the man and the woman to wear this symbol of eternal commitment, but among members of the Royal Family, this is not the case.
Brother William has never worn a wedding band during his seven years of marriage to Kate.
And neither has his grandfather, Prince Philip, during his 70 years with their grandmother the Queen.
On the other hand, Harry’s father, Prince Charles has always worn a ring, during both of his marriages but he doesn’t wear it on his left ring finger, rather on his pinky.
So, when it came time to decide which way Harry and Meghan would go, the world was waiting to see which would win out: Harry’s royal/family tradition or Meghan’s deeply-seated idea of what a husband should do.
In the past, Prince Harry and all the members of the family for that matter, have taken great care to make sure that they don't do anything that would upset the Queen, for whom all matters of protocol and tradition hold a very important place. In this case, however, Harry seemed to defer to what his bride would want.
Well, now we have the answer, don’t we? When it was time to exchange rings during the ceremony, the couple pulled it off without so much as a blink of an eye.
Not only did Harry place a wedding band on his bride’s finger, but Meghan returned the favor to her groom. And for the first time in recent royal history, a male member of the family is wearing a wedding band.
This seemingly simple gesture on the part of the Duke of Sussex is just one more testament to the depth of his love for and devotion to his Duchess.
And if this is any indication of the strength of their marriage, then we can look forward to watching the couple share their lives together for many, many years to come.
