On May 19th, 2018, the wedding of the century happened between Britain’s Prince Harry and America’s Meghan Markle. The wedding was indeed an incredible day in history. With more than 2 billion live streamers and 600 guests, the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex experienced the wedding of a lifetime.
Guests ranged from local charity heads to famous superstars, including George Clooney, Sir Elton John, and Serena Williams. Although perhaps one of the most recognizable guests was internationally broadcasting legend, Oprah Winfrey.
Believe it or not, fans were shocked to see Oprah in attendance! While she is an entertainment sensation, she’s never been close with either Harry or Meghan. Immediately, fans began to wonder if she was there to get the first interview. Another theory was that Oprah was there to interview Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, the day after the wedding. Not only did Oprah get the royal invitation, but she also got one of the very coveted seats in the chapel’s quire amongst the bride and groom’s family- and that includes the Queen! Fans were inquisitive.
After several weeks and several interviews later, Oprah finally decided to put the rumors to rest. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Oprah shared that she was invited for the same reason as anyone else- to witness the nuptials. She then went on to share her thoughts on the marriage. Her words for the legendary wedding was that it was “transformative.” She continued, “I think it's bigger than them and I think it bodes well for hope for all of us.”
But even after that, fans were confused by her straightforward answer. As we know, this wasn’t “just another wedding.” This was the wedding of the century! That’s when British Vogue met with Oprah and confronted her again about the wedding.
But rather than giving the people the answer they wanted, Oprah remained true to her original statement: to be there. She redirected the conversation (as she always does so well) to how she felt after attending the wedding. This time, her response is leaving millions shook with hope.
Oprah shared, “It left me feeling that anything is possible through the power of love! Reverend Curry was right!” Oprah’s only response since the wedding has been about its genuine love and transformational power, not about interviews or juicy details!
After her loyalty to the only addressing the transformational power of Harry and Meghan’s love, we’re beginning to think that Oprah was there just to witness the love. Her words are reminding us all that it’s not about getting to the bottom what who’s right or wrong, and it’s about trusting the love and supporting it! Let us know what you think in the comments!
