On August 16th, the Queen of Soul and one of the most iconic female vocalist in history died. Aretha Franklin has passed away from pancreatic cancer. She was 76.
News of Aretha’s dealing health surfaced on August 13th, just two days before her death. In a simple tweet, her friend and newscaster, Evrod Cassidy, shared that Aretha was gravely ill an that her death was imminent.
Aretha was believed to be battling cancer and after years of shying away from a diagnosis or health concerns at all- it was confirmed that she had been suffering from Pancreatic cancer. In her final days, TMZ reported that Aretha was only 85 pounds.
Since the original announcement made by Evrod, Aretha was comforted by millions of prayers and the company of her family as well as some very special friends. Since her passing, her loyal fan club has shown immense support to the Queen of Soul’s legacy.
On loyal fan, in particular, found the words that so perfectly depict what Aretha Franklin meant to music lovers. Sir Paul McCartney took to Twitter where he shared some perhaps the most fitting statement to honor the late Queen of Soul.
The famous Beatle star wrote: “Let’s all take a moment to give thanks for the beautiful life of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of our souls, who inspired us all for many many years. She will be missed but the memory of her greatness as a musician and a fine human being will live with us forever. Love Paul.”
Truly, Aretha wasn’t just the “Queen of Soul,” but she was the Queen of our souls. Her music transformed the way people celebrated, loved, dreamed, and evolved as humans. Her music was iconic and revolutionary to say the least- and Paul captured that truth so beautifully.
