Being a celebrity might sound like a lot of fun; you get loads of free goodies, you travel the world and you get the star treatment everywhere you go. But there are also plenty of downsides to being a celebrity: your every move is watched and criticized, lies are published about you and your loved ones, and you’re constantly under fire from ruthless critics.
On August 20th, superstar singer, Ariana Grande, and her fiancé, Pete Davidson, were photographed along the Video Music Awards (VMAs). The couple has recently been a hot topic in the entertainment world after a speedy engagement. While the star couple has a massive fan base, they also have some harsh critics.
Following the VMAs, the publication, Barstool Sports, commented on Pete Davidson’s physical appearances by poking fun at his “sunken in eyes.”
Ariana took to Twitter were she quickly corrected them with the sad truth behind Pete Davidson’s appearance: he suffers from Crohn’s disease.
Ariana commented back to Barstool Sports: “Y’all do kno this man has an auto immune disease …… right? ….. like you do understand what you’re doing when u do this right? jus wanna make sure.” Immediately, fans jumped to her and Pete Davidson’s defense.
According to Dr. Albert Knapp, a top gastroenterologist in New York City, when individuals with Crohn’s become dehydrated, they’re eyes can sink in. Dr. Knapp told Page Six that “The reason they’re sunken is because people with Crohn’s disease can sometimes become dehydrated. But when you rehydrate they return to normal. Crohn’s disease does not directly cause eyes that look sunken in.”
Pete was diagnosed with Crohn’s when he was a teenager. While he’s in constant pain, he doesn’t feel the need to remind people that the disease has crippling power over his body. According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, “Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, especially of the colon and ileum, associated with ulcers and fistulae.”
Barstool Sports has since made an apology, but they did receive massive backlash from Ariana fans. It is never okay to make fun of someone’s appearance. Health is a gift and if you are in good health, you are blessed. Please pray for those affected by this chronic disease.
