Raccoons are known for being curious little critters who love to stick their noses where they don’t belong! One little raccoon has managed to weasel his way into a place you wouldn’t normally expect to find a raccoon! Pumpkin The Raccoon lives in a home with his family and two dogs.
Pumpkin lives in a beautiful home in the Bahamas where he is well taken care of and loved! While it is illegal to keep a raccoon as a pet in many places, it is completely legal in the Bahamas! In the United States, it is illegal due to concerns about rabies. The rabies vaccine created for pets has not been proven effective in raccoons, which has resulted in the concerns. However, the Bahamas currently has no rabies so that worry is non-existent.
Pumpkin was found in December of 2014 by Rosie Kemp in her backyard in Nassau. Pumpkin had fallen out of a tree and broken her hind leg! Rosie waited, hoping that her mother would come to claim her young child but when the mother never showed they tried to contact the humane society who said they were unable to take a raccoon.
Laura Young is Rosie’s daughter, and decided to raise the young raccoon until she could be released safely. They had two rescue dogs at home, Oreo and Toffee and decided the coon would fit in well. Pumpkin was too domesticated by being raised in the human household and was unable to be returned to the wild so she remains in the household today!
Pumpkin formed a close bond with Oreo and Toffee from the start, and loves on her two siblings every chance she gets. She loves to eat watermelon every chance she gets, and really enjoys swimming! Playing in the water is definitely one of her favorite things to do, and she even tries to turn on the sink by herself when she wants to play!
Of course, keeping a raccoon as a pet is no easy task with their mischievous attitudes. Keeping a raccoon is basically like having a permanent toddler, however they are capable of climbing and getting into even harder to reach things than a toddler! It takes a special person to keep one as a pet, as they are very difficult to manage at times, as they are still wild animals. They also need a special diet involving raw meat to make sure they stay healthy.
Pumpkin has an Instagram account where you can follow her antics and they currently have over 1.2 million followers! They have also written a book about this peculiar little pet!
